Common mistakes on content writer resumes
- No samples to open
- A resume that says "wrote blogs" without a link is set aside. Put a portfolio page, a Medium profile or a Google Drive folder of three to five published pieces in the header, and make sure each piece shows your byline or a client's confirmation.
- Output without results
- "Wrote SEO-friendly articles" is a job description. "Wrote 220 posts in 21 months; the blog grew from 12,000 to 85,000 sessions a month and 28 posts rank on page 1" is evidence. Ask your SEO team for Search Console numbers before you leave a job.
- A resume with typos or padding
- Your resume is the first writing sample read. Cut "passionate wordsmith" and "dynamic content creator", keep every sentence specific, and proofread it twice; one spelling mistake does more damage here than on any other resume.
- Not saying which formats and domains
- Long-form SEO articles, landing pages, email, social captions, scripts and technical docs are hired separately, and so are fintech, health and ed-tech. Name the formats and domains you have actually written in, with a count for each.
- Hiding the tools
- Semrush, Ahrefs, Surfer, Search Console, WordPress, Grammarly: name the ones you have used on real briefs. Content leads filter on them, and "familiar with SEO tools" matches nothing.
Questions about the content writer resume format
- What numbers can a content writer resume honestly include?
- Pieces a month and typical word count, the number of articles ranking on page 1 or in the top 10, organic sessions a blog gained over a period, email open or click rates, and the number of clients or domains. Take them from Search Console or Analytics reports and say the period; rounded figures are fine, invented ones are not.
- How do I write a content writer resume as a fresher with no clients?
- Build a small portfolio first: three to five pieces on a personal blog, Medium or LinkedIn, on topics in the domain you want. Then lead the resume with that link, the degree, any internship or college publication, and a certification such as HubSpot's content marketing course. The sections stay the same as the sample.
- Should a content writer resume mention using AI writing tools?
- Say so only if a job asks, and then describe how you use them (research, outlines, first drafts you rewrite). Most content leads in 2026 care more about whether your published samples read like a person; the numbers and the portfolio carry the resume, not the toolchain.
- Does a content writer resume need an English literature degree?
- No. Engineering, commerce and science graduates write for SaaS, fintech and health brands all the time, and domain knowledge often matters more than the degree. Put the degree where it belongs and let the samples and the traffic numbers make the case.
