An accountant's resume is read by two people: an HR screener matching it against "Tally, GST, TDS" in the posting, and a finance head checking whether you have actually closed books and filed returns yourself. The format below answers both — a skills section a screener can tick off, and bullets that name the returns, registrations and turnover you handled. Common mistakes on accountant resumes
- "Responsible for GST" with no returns named
- Name the returns and the scale. "Responsible for GST compliance" becomes "File GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B monthly for three registrations and the annual GSTR-9; cleared ₹18 lakh of unmatched input credit."
- No turnover or volume anywhere
- The company's turnover, the number of invoices a day, the number of bank accounts and the size of the payable book tell a finance head what you are used to. Put at least one of them in every role.
- Tally without the version
- Postings ask for Tally Prime specifically, and a screener searching for it will miss a resume that only says "Tally". Write "Tally Prime" (and "Tally ERP 9" if you used it) in skills and in a bullet.
- Listing accounting principles as skills
- "Accounting standards, journal entries, trial balance" is the B.Com syllabus, not evidence. Replace them with the work: month-end close by a date, audit schedules prepared, TDS sections you deduct under.
- Burying the audit
- Supporting a statutory audit is the strongest proof the books were right. Give it a bullet with the number of years and how the audit went, rather than a line in the skills list.
Questions about the accountant resume format
- Should an accountant resume mention GST filings?
- Yes, specifically: which returns (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-9), how many registrations, and anything you fixed, such as input-credit reconciliation against GSTR-2B. "GST compliance" on its own is read as having watched someone else file.
- What is the best resume format for an accountant with 5 years of experience?
- One page: a three-line summary with the turnover you handle and the software, skills grouped into software, taxation and accounts, then experience with three or four bullets per role, education and certifications last. The ledger template in the sample keeps the numbers aligned and easy to scan.
- Is Tally enough for an accountant resume, or should I list SAP and Zoho Books too?
- List what you have used for real work. Tally Prime covers most Indian SMEs and manufacturing companies; SAP FICO matters for large companies and Zoho Books or QuickBooks for startups and firms serving foreign clients. Naming a tool you have only seen in a course is the first interview question you will fail.
- How does an accountant resume show TDS work without sounding like a job description?
