Project manager resume format

A project manager's resume is judged on scale and record: how much money and how many people you were trusted with, and how often you delivered on budget and on date. Delivery heads read for portfolio value, team size, margin and client, then for PMP or a Scrum certification as a filter. The format below puts those in the summary and the first bullet of every role, and keeps the engineering years behind it. The sample is an eight-year manager.

IT Project Manager · PMP · Delivery, Budgets, Teams

Summary

IT project manager with eight years in services delivery, the last four running a portfolio of ₹4.5 Cr a year for banking and retail clients with a team of 22 across Chennai and Kochi. Delivered 11 of 12 projects on budget and 9 on the committed date, PMP certified, and comfortable in both Scrum and fixed-bid waterfall engagements. Looking for a senior project manager or delivery manager role.

Experience

Project Manager · Calyx Digital Services

Chennai · Apr 2022 – Present

  • Manage a portfolio of 4-5 concurrent projects worth ₹4.5 Cr a year for two banks and a retail chain, with a team of 22 engineers, QA and analysts across Chennai and Kochi.
  • Delivered 11 of 12 projects within budget and 9 on the committed date since 2022; the largest, a ₹1.6 Cr core-banking integration, went live in 11 months with zero severity-1 incidents in the first quarter.
  • Own the project P&L: track effort against estimates weekly in Jira and Microsoft Project, raised a 2.4 Cr change-request pipeline over three years and held gross margin at 34% against a 30% target.
  • Run steering committees with client CIOs monthly and keep a risk register per project; escalated and closed a vendor-licence risk that would have delayed a ₹90 lakh release by two months.
  • Hired and onboarded 9 engineers and 2 leads, and introduced a two-week release train that cut production deployments from 6 hours to 90 minutes.

Project Lead · Nexora Systems

Chennai · Jun 2020 – Mar 2022

  • Led a 9-member Scrum team building a loan-collection app for an NBFC: 14 sprints, ₹70 lakh budget, delivered 3 weeks early with 98% of planned scope.
  • Ran sprint planning, estimation and client demos, and brought sprint predictability from 60% to 88% of committed story points over six sprints.
  • Managed two offshore vendors for testing and UI work, ₹18 lakh in contracts, with weekly reviews against SLAs.

Software Engineer · Nexora Systems

Chennai · Jul 2018 – May 2020

  • Built Java and Spring Boot services for a retail loyalty platform handling 1.2 million members and mentored 3 fresh graduates.
  • Acted as the team's release coordinator for 20+ production releases, which led to the move into project leadership.

Common mistakes on project manager resumes

No budget, no team size, no portfolio value
"Managed multiple projects for banking clients" says nothing about scale. Write "Manage 4-5 concurrent projects worth ₹4.5 Cr a year with a team of 22" — the two numbers a delivery head looks for before reading further.
Claiming every project was on time and on budget
Nobody believes 100%. A record like "11 of 12 within budget, 9 on the committed date" is more credible and invites the question you want: what happened on the others, and what you changed.
A list of PMBOK knowledge areas as skills
"Scope, schedule, cost, quality, risk, procurement, communication" is the exam syllabus. Keep the skills section to methods and tools you ran projects with, and let the bullets show scope control, risk handling and vendor management in action.
Dropping the engineering years
The years as a developer or lead are how you got here and why engineers trust you. Keep them short — two bullets, the stack and the moment you took on coordination — rather than deleting them to look senior.
Methodology without context
Say which engagements were Scrum and which were fixed-bid waterfall, and what you did differently in each: sprint predictability on one, change requests and milestone billing on the other. "Agile and Waterfall" on its own tells a reader nothing.

Questions about the project manager resume format

Is PMP necessary on a project manager resume in India?
Not necessary, but widely used as a filter by IT services companies and in postings above about six years of experience. If you have it, put it in the headline and the certifications section. If you do not, a CSM or PRINCE2 plus a strong budget and schedule record still gets read; the certification does not replace the numbers.
How long should a project manager resume be at eight years?
One page if you can, two at most. Three roles with the recent one carrying five bullets and the engineering role two, grouped skills, a degree and two certifications fit on one page in the executive template; add a second page only for a longer list of significant projects with client, value and outcome.
Should a project manager resume list the technologies the team used?
Briefly, in a "technical background" skills group and in the project context, because delivery heads prefer managers who can follow a design discussion. Do not list them as if you still write the code; the bullets should be about budget, schedule, people and the client.
What should a project manager resume say about failed or delayed projects?
Give the honest record ("9 of 12 on the committed date") and, if there is room, one bullet on a risk you escalated and closed. Interviewers assume delays exist; a resume that shows you measure them and what you changed afterwards reads as more experienced than one with a perfect score.
