Data scientist resume format

A data scientist's resume is read by a recruiter matching tools (Python, SQL, a modelling library) and then by a hiring manager asking whether a model you built changed a number the business cares about. Each role should pair the model metric (AUC, F1, error) with the outcome (defaults, stock-outs, conversion). The sample below is a four-year data scientist who started as an analyst, in a timeline template.

Sample data scientist resume, as text

Data Scientist · Python, Machine Learning

Summary

Data scientist with 4 years in lending and e-commerce, building models that are in production and whose effect is measured: a credit-scoring model that raised AUC from 0.71 to 0.79 and cut 30-day defaults in the approved pool by 18%, and a demand forecast that reduced stock-outs by 22%. Comfortable from the SQL and feature work through MLflow and a FastAPI endpoint. Looking for a data scientist role on a product team.

Experience

Data Scientist · Kaveri Credit

Bengaluru · Mar 2024 – Present

  • Built the credit-scoring model for small-ticket personal loans (XGBoost on 1.4 million applications, 120 features); AUC rose from 0.71 to 0.79, and 30-day defaults in the approved pool fell 18% over the next two quarters at the same approval rate.
  • Developed an early-warning model that flags accounts 30 days before likely default; the collections team now reaches 65% of flagged accounts before the due date, up from 40%.
  • Put both models into production with MLflow, a FastAPI scoring service and Docker on AWS; p95 scoring latency under 200 ms, retrained monthly with drift checks.
  • Ran two A/B tests on the approval cutoff with the risk team and wrote the policy memo that moved it.

Data Analyst · Bazaar Grid

Bengaluru · Jul 2022 – Feb 2024

  • Built the weekly demand forecast for 12,000 SKUs across four warehouses (LightGBM); stock-outs fell 22% and excess inventory 15% over two quarters.
  • Analysed search-to-cart funnels in SQL and Python; a ranking change based on it lifted conversion 6% in an A/B test over 400,000 sessions.
  • Built the Metabase dashboards the category team reviews every Monday, replacing a set of hand-made Excel reports.

Projects

Kaggle — tabular playground, silver medal

Finished in the top 4% of 3,200 teams in a tabular competition with a gradient-boosting ensemble and target encoding; solution write-up and code published.

Kannada product-review sentiment dataset

Open dataset of 12,000 Kannada e-commerce reviews labelled for sentiment, with a fine-tuned baseline (F1 0.84). Used in two college projects and cited in one workshop paper.

Common mistakes on data scientist resumes

Model metrics with no business outcome
"Built a churn model with 0.86 AUC" is half the story and the half the business did not ask for. Add what happened: "the retention team called the top decile and churn in that group fell 12%." If the model never reached users, say it was a prototype rather than imply it shipped.
A list of algorithms as the skills section
Linear Regression, Logistic Regression, Decision Trees, Random Forest, SVM, KNN, Naive Bayes… is the syllabus of one course. Group skills by what you use (Languages, Machine learning, Data, MLOps) and let the bullets name the algorithm that shipped.
Course projects presented as experience
A Titanic or house-price notebook belongs nowhere on a resume after your first job. Keep a Kaggle finish with the rank, an open dataset with users, or a model deployed for someone — the sample lists two — and give the number that shows someone used the work.
No sign the model reached production
Hiring managers ask how the model is served and retrained. One bullet answers it: "Put the model into production with MLflow and a FastAPI endpoint; p95 latency under 200 ms, retrained monthly with drift checks." Leave it out and the resume reads as notebooks only.

Questions about the data scientist resume format

Should a data scientist resume lead with education or experience after three years?
Experience, in a timeline that shows the move from analyst to data scientist if you made one. Education moves below with the degree and CGPA; an M.Tech or M.Sc in statistics or data science is worth a line in the summary too, since some postings filter on it.
How should a data scientist resume show a model that did not improve the business number?
Honestly and briefly: say what was tested, what was measured and what was learned, such as a model that beat the baseline offline but failed its A/B test. One such bullet reads as rigour. A resume where every model succeeded reads as one where nothing was measured.
Does a data scientist resume need deep learning and LLM keywords?
Only if the posting asks and you have done it. Most data-science roles in lending, retail and operations run on gradient boosting and good features. A term the posting mentions that your resume does not is a gap to consider, not evidence you lack the skill, and adding PyTorch without a project behind it only moves the question to the interview.
Where does a Kaggle rank go on a data scientist resume?
In projects, with the percentile, the field size and a link to the code; a medal is a figure like any other. It supports the resume rather than carrying it — a production model with a business result on the experience side matters more to a hiring manager than any leaderboard.
