Java developer resume format
Most Java developers in India work at IT services companies, where the resume has two jobs: match the keywords an HR screen filters on (Java, Spring Boot, microservices, a database) and show a technical interviewer that you owned something — a service, a migration, a performance fix — rather than raised tickets on it. The sample below is a five-year developer across two services companies, in a single-column template.

Sample Java developer resume, as text
Java Developer · Spring Boot, Microservices
Summary
Java developer with 5 years at IT services companies building Spring Boot services for banking and insurance clients. Owns services end to end: API design, Hibernate data access, JUnit tests, Docker images and production support. Reduced a loan-eligibility API's p95 latency from 1.8 s to 420 ms and took a module's test coverage from 35% to 80%. Looking for a senior developer role on a backend team.
Experience
Senior Software Engineer · Trident Digital Services
Chennai · Apr 2024 – Present
- Own four Spring Boot microservices in a retail bank's loan-origination platform, used by about 9,000 branch staff.
- Reduced the eligibility-check API's p95 latency from 1.8 s to 420 ms by adding Redis caching and removing N+1 queries in Hibernate.
- Moved the services from WAR deployments on Tomcat to Docker images on the client's Kubernetes cluster; a release went from a day to under two hours.
- Review pull requests for a team of six and mentor two junior developers through their first production changes.
Software Engineer · Meridian Infotech Services
Chennai · Aug 2021 – Mar 2024
- Developed REST APIs in Java 11 and Spring Boot for an insurer's policy-servicing portal, handling about 150,000 requests a day.
- Wrote JUnit and Mockito tests that took the module's coverage from 35% to 80%; production defects fell by about a third over the next two releases.
- Migrated 40 scheduled batch jobs from a legacy EJB application to Spring Batch with no missed runs after cutover.

Common mistakes on Java developer resumes
- Naming the client project instead of the work
- "Worked on ABC Bank LOS project" means nothing outside your company. Say what the system did, how many people used it and what you changed: "Own four Spring Boot services in a loan-origination platform used by 9,000 branch staff." Leave out the client name if your contract requires it.
- A skills list that repeats the Java syllabus
- Core Java, Collections, Exception Handling, Multithreading, JDBC, Servlets, JSP, Struts… is a reading list, not a skills section. Group what you use now (Frameworks, Data, Build and deploy) and keep each group to what you would be interviewed on.
- Bullets that start with "Involved in" or "Responsible for"
- Both phrases hide whether you did the work. "Involved in performance tuning" becomes "Reduced the eligibility API's p95 latency from 1.8 s to 420 ms by adding Redis caching." Start with the verb and end with the number.
- Listing every Java version and every database you have installed
- One line for the Java version you write today, one group for databases you have actually queried in production. "Java 8/11/17/21" and six databases read as padding, and each one is a question you must be ready to answer.
- No tests anywhere on the resume
- Senior Java postings ask for JUnit and Mockito, and interviewers ask how you test. One bullet with a coverage figure ("took the module from 35% to 80% coverage") answers both and sets you apart from candidates whose testing is a line in the skills section.
Questions about the Java developer resume format
- How many years of experience should a Java developer resume show before using the title "Senior"?
- Use the title your employer gave you, whatever the years. If you are a Software Engineer with five years, write that and let the bullets carry seniority: owning services, mentoring juniors, leading a migration. Inflating a title is checked at background verification.
- Should a Java developer resume list Spring Boot and Spring separately?
- Yes, if you have worked with the wider framework (Spring Security, Spring Batch, Spring Data) and not only Boot. Postings mention them separately and keyword filters look for the exact phrase; the sample lists Spring Boot, Spring Security and Spring Batch as their own items.
- How should a Java developer at a services company describe client work?
- By the system, the users and the change, not the client or the account name. Industry ("a retail bank", "an insurer") is enough context, and it is safer under most NDAs. Numbers you can give without exposing the client — requests a day, users, latency, coverage — are what the next interviewer wants.
- Does a Java developer resume need a certification?
- Not for most roles; experience bullets matter more. The Oracle Java SE certification is still recognised and is worth listing if you hold it, and a cloud certification (AWS, Azure) helps when the posting mentions that cloud. Write the full official title so a search finds it.
